Pug from Behind Art PrintWe like portraits best when they come with a little abrasion. This pug isn't posing he's turned away, glancing back over one shoulder, painted in loose watercolour with warm beige fur and a deep black muzzle. Put him on a quiet wall and the room softens. The warm tones lift cream and oat coloured rooms, and the looseness of the brushwork keeps it from tipping into cute or twee. He works well above a low sideboard, beside a bed, or down a hallway where

A clay or terracotta pot picks up the deeper red along the waterline

hallway or bedroom — somewhere the eye can settle

Don't pair it with cold minimalism or glossy white units — it wants a room with a little texture and history

It works best on a wall that can hold colour on its own — hallway

Looks especially sharp framed in oak

The loose brushwork and broken colour stop reading as museum and start reading as a real

It hangs best at eye level on a calm wall — above a slim console
