Description

1997 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Giuseppe Quintarelli, Veneto, ItalyPossibly the greatest of all Amarones. The grapes are left to dry on rush matting until the end of January. After 20 days of maceration, a long, slow fermentation takes place over the next 45 days. After the initial fermentation the wine is put into Slavenian oak barrels to mature for seven years, refermenting from time to time as the temperature rises in the summers. At the end of seven years a very serious, dry wine emerges with amazing complexity

With time in the glass

It saw a maturation of 24 months in old 225l barrique

showcasing a dark salmon-pink colour

Lots to enjoy here although it is more ambitious and less superficially charming than many a Charmes

with black fruit notes

pure and transparent expression of Beaune

and it is about as quintessential Grenache as you can find

with Peat aromas giving the edge

jancisrobinson

Pale salmon pink

Incredibly long on the finish

The plot here is on the start of the plateau just above the Côte Bougerots
