Description

Blue-bird by John James Audubon Canvas PrintNo, the bright blue doesn't soften the room. It defines it. This is Audubon's bluebird plate from Birds of America a male mid flight above a feeding pair on a mullein stalk, on off white paper. A quiet wall stops being background. The eye goes straight to the blue, then settles into the soft browns and the script at the bottom. The room reads as considered rather than busy. It earns its place in a study, hallway, or calm bedroom. Hang at eye level on

red and black — confident

the wall above a nursery dresser

where a sharp black and white close-up can do the talking

The room gets a jolt of colour without losing its calm

The soft green sky and terracotta façade lift quiet rooms without shouting

on a wall wide enough to let the leaves breathe

The reds give you a focal point

and don't crowd it with other loud prints — let it be the loudest thing on the wall

linen tea towels and a couple of leafy houseplants

Don't stack it next to other busy patterns — give it air

Avoid clashing with busy patterned wallpaper or other bright primaries on the same wall — let this be the bit of colour the room is built around

A kids' room gets a proper laugh on the wall instead of generic decor
