Description

Black tourmaline with albite, smoky quartz, hyalite, and an aquamarineLocale: Erongo Mountain, Namibia Approx dimensions: 3. 25 x 3 x 1. 75" Approx weight: 417g This large glossy black tourmaline, known as schorl, is accompanied by smaller schorl crystals, smoky quartz, and albite. Some of the smaller schorls have mercedes terminations. It's unclear to me if the main schorl is a single crystal or some product of twinning, but it is a large blocky piece with an offset split through the middle. Erongo schorl typically has

this piece has a disc-like botryoidal quartz formation on one calcite crystal

you can see the first generation of growth was an icy clear colorless quartz

The calcite formed a chunky druzy of icy colorless intersecting rhombohedral crystals that almost appear cubic in areas

depositing a white crust of included quartz on the surface

Usually the tip of the quartz point will not be coated with this second generation of growth (learn more about quartz growth forms)

Hyalite turns "radioactive" green under UV light due to trace elements of uranium

Material: Dragon's blood jasper

with some of the milkier banding more muted

Some of the radial growth appears more like stacked thin parallel faces

or a paramorph

Approx dimensions: 5

light whitish and more green when fluorescing
