Description

Philippe Gilbert, Sauvignon Blanc, Menetou-Salon, Loire Valley, France 2023Philippe Gilberts stellar Menetou Salon Blanc is unfailingly mineral driven, yet without the straitjacketed citrusy rigidity more conventionally and commercially minded Loire Sauvignon Blanc frequently displays. A sense of lusciousness, distinct from viscosity, provides a texturally attractive counterpoint to the rapier like acidity, and nods ever so glancingly to its upstream Chenin Blanc based cousins, yet this is unmistakably Kimmeridgian grown

Here is an estate where one finds neither pretense nor hubris

Valtellina is a network of steeply terraced vineyards that stretches 25 miles from east to west

vines are sheltered by coastal hillsides and mountain ranges

or burgers on the grill

to planting vineyards at high altitudes where no one had dared to plant before

on the edge of the tectonic rift crossing the Bekaa

they feature never-ending aromas of eucalyptus

Heavily influenced by the teaching and research of the German biodynamic guru

No artificial yeasts added

Light brown in color with an amber hue

and a distinct sense of place

and a beautiful length on the palate
