Description

Impact | Depoe Bay, OregonThe Pacific Doesn't Negotiate with Basalt. At Depoe Bay, you don't watch waves from a safe distance. The sea wall is right there, and in conditions like these, the ocean doesn't care who's watching. This is the moment of collision the full force of an open ocean swell meeting the coast at the world's smallest navigable harbor. The energy has built for hundreds of miles. At this point it has exactly one place to go. Every print is made to order on

Commander Tom Malloy drove that day

as if the sea itself has paused to watch the silent ballet

otherworldly

You cannot touch anything

doing exactly what it had been doing for thirty million years

The Natural Bridges area — a series of sea arches carved by thousands of years of Pacific surf — is the kind of place that makes you understand why photographers haul heavy gear down unmarked trails

A rare sight on the Oregon Coast — a bald eagle perched in fresh snow near Yaquina Head in Newport

I hiked to the top of Salal Hill when this swell moved through — the only angle that shows the lighthouse the way the Oregon Coast actually frames it: small against the Pacific

I shot eleven exposures in four minutes

and the pelican was right there in the middle of it — three inches off the water

You Have to Climb Salal Hill to See It This Way

This isn't one wave
