Description

2010 Sanibel Packing Company on Matthews' Wharf Christmas OrnamentThis ornament from 2010 is in remembrance of our first location, opened in 1899 served as a packing and shipping house for the agricultural products grown on Sanibel and Captiva in the late 1800s. This location was ON Matthews' Wharf right at the end of Bailey Road next to where we all drive onto the island at the causeway now over San Carlos Bay. This original store was washed away by a hurricane and our family rebuilt next to the wharf on land where

the Lighthouse Board requested funds from Congress to establish a light first in 1881

As one of the first lights on the coast of the west side of Florida north of Key West

when even dimming the light would have still blinded lookouts at the tower just south of the light watching for enemy vessels

We know this thanks to the outstanding historical archives at the Sanibel Library

This store was built right next to Matthews' Wharf where the ferry landed

the Sanibel Light

The light was extinguished when the storm blew through

through the 1926 hurricane that washed the original store on the wharf off the map

The light went unused during World War II
