Description

A Georgian prattware baby in cradle figure c1800See our website periodceramicsandantiques. org. Description. A charming prattware baby cradle figure, c1800. It is not definitively known what the significance of these figures was, though it is surmised that they may have been wedding gifts, superstitiously designed to hasten the arrival of progeny. Navely modelled and painted, these little pieces are rare. Probably Staffordshire. Unmarked. Condition. Some cracking, as shown. Otherwise wear

with a dentil rim border

as a cheap source of protein

Navy blue border

One of the large platters is so marked

In excellent antidote condition

within which are tiny floral sprays

The centre of the stylised leaves and the fronds are painted in iron red

Unmarked but see plate 236 of Berthoud

Enamel overglazed decoration was introduced belatedly by the factory

hand painted with a large floral spray

but does have a painter's mark-47

A crack running from the left side of the head down the body to just below the left arm
