Description

Diana of Versailles or Artemis Sculpture with Plinth c.1890-1920A superb rendition of The Diana of Versailles or Artemis sculpture, after the partially restored Roman copy (1st or 2nd AD) of a lost Greek bronze original attributed to Leochares, c. 325 BC. Artemis is Goddess of the Hunt. Diana, here represented at the hunt, hastening forward, as if in pursuit of game. She looks toward the right, and with raised right arm is about to draw an arrow from her quiver as she grasps a young deer at her feet. Created from

atop a cock-beaded centre drawer with pairs of drawers flaking it’s sides

Fabulous pair of Italian Terracotta planters with foliage swags and satyrs faces

This dyall sayes Dy all we must”

A perfect piece for any garden or orangery

This very fine cast shows the god holding aloft a coiled snake

Traces of the original gilding are visible

Original prickets and drip trays

The hedgerows are crisp with dried ferns and seed heads awaiting the icy fingers of winters frosts

Ashes captures the changing of seasons

it is a substantial and atmospheric piece of early English garden and architectural sculpture

Two Japanese storage jars

The Armoury would have been an important and prestigious place - the frieze surmounting the desk is unusually ornate and elegant
